  2. When I was 12 or 13, I heard ‘The Revolution will not be Televised’ for the first time. It was 1991. The song/poem made me feel like no other song had before; this seemed to flick a switch that had never been touched before. At such a young age I new nothing of GSH or any of the references in The Revolution, but I knew what I was listening to was something influential.

    Slowly over the years I immersed myself in rap, hip hop, spoken word and that ultimately lead to poetry. What was termed as Gangster Rap got me interested, Ice-T made me listen, Gil Scott Heron made me want to hear more.

    At 31 I am now establishing myself as a ‘spoken word artist’ and ‘poet’. When I find myself on stage, whether it be at a festival, theatre or local bar, I can trace back my love for the spoken word right back to Gil. Right to the moment I heard and experienced ‘The Revolution will not be Televised’ for the first time.

    I am so excited about the release of ‘I’m New Here’; I feel how a teenage girl must feel about JLS record. Richard Russell’s influence is evident in the production; its sound is modern and the album doesn’t feel out of place on the XL Label. However it still feels like a Gil Scot Heron album and it really delivers. I’m a huge fan of Gils back catalogue and Spirits was the top of my listening list, however this album has just shot to the top with a ‘WOW’.

    ‘I’m New Here’ should get people interested, interested in music, interested in rap, interested in Hip Hop, interested in poetry, interested in jazz, break beat, dub step, interested in Gil.

    A fitting album for 2010 and fitting new beginning for Gil Scott Heron!

  5. I woke up to the radio and the words the revolution will not be televised. True words I rememberd from a sample in a techno tune.I woke up fast I needed to know more. As I listened I learned of Gil and his work. He said a little but what he said hit home not hollow words but speech with truth and meaning. I or prehaps we have a need for this. So I found out more on wikipedia and then linked to this site and listened. I found words of wisdom some of fun and tracks so short you want them to be longer. Excellent album Gil.

    We both know you were there all along and it was we who had gone. That’s life.
    But if we did go, we had your music and your voice – that voice – ringing in our ears as we went.

  22. I saw Gil in Liverpool in the early 80s, New York in the early 90s and now I’m going to see him in London in the early teenies (or whatever they’re called). Excited would be an understatement.
    I’m an old punk rocker and as far as I’m concerned it’s all about the words. It just so happens that Gil has some killer tunes to back them up too.
    This man feels like part of my life and I’m a happier individual for it …

I recently (October 2009) saw a fantastic interview with you on Al Jazeera/english (One on One) and your wisdom, lightness, humour and social criticism all seemed in such amazing balance. It is so great that you’ve had this opputunity with XL (bravo!) to reach a new generation. Excellent album, a bit short – because I’m greedy and just want more, but that’s healthy I guess. I still want more. But better short and perfect than long and winded.
    Years ago I did my first album ‘Tick’ with Negative Stencil, at the time of the first war in the Gulf, and we took The Revolution Will Not Be Televised and made it The Will Be Televised version – with full honours to the man who wanted things to change in a world that now has more and more control and more and more war and more and more televised media. …. Anyway, I’m New Here. Great title for such a master of spoken word, poetry, song and melody. Fresh Bone. Humble. And your voice is still so fantastically warm and moving. It’s the words that count above all else. Love the production.

  38. I was expecting a reprise of Gil’s former work[s] of which I am such a big fan. I got much more than I expected. Gil’s voice is richer than ever. His pros are hauntingly on point. Cause though he keeps the focus on himself, how much more alike are we than different. I more than heard this music I felt it too and that is more than I expected.

    As a kid growing up in the 70’s I thought of Gil Scott-Heron as a jazz musician. However today you have been moved into genre all it’s own.

  40. I heard a review of this amazing CD on NPR this afternoon while driving home. I sat in my car and was blown away by what I heard. I immediately went into my apartment to find this website and listen to the CD in its entirety. At 54, I have listened to everything from big band when I was in high school to industrial music during the 90’s, but unfortunately, music as of late has become rather dull for me. I’m always in search for a new sound, and now FINALLY! The blend of lyrics, atmospheric mood, emotion and beautiful production of this CD is outstanding. I am awestruck.

  46. In 1979, I was a grand prize winner in the Gil Scott-Heron Poetry contest sponsored by Arista Record Company and Radio Station KRE of Berkeley, CA. The name of my poem was “Theme for El Jefe.” At that time, Gil Scott-Heron was my hero and role model as a poet. He remains my hero and role model. I am so glad about the release of “I am New Here.” I have heard everything Gil has ever release as a vinyl album or CD. Part one and two of the song “On Coming From a Broken Home” is some of his finest work. As I listened to his “Me and the Devil” for the first time, I thought about the legendary blues artist Robert Johnson and I got chills down my spine. Thank you El Jefe for this new release and please stay with us on this side of the river. We need your voice now and forever and forever and forever!

Your involvement in the struggle for Black rights and your opposition to South African apartheid was, and still is, an inspiration. I am sadden to hear you will now be playing in Tel Aviv. Please reconsider – just as you once refused to entertain South African aparthied at Sun City, please refuse to entertain Israeli apartheid against the Palestinian people and don’t play Tel Aviv. Please respect and join the Palestinian civil society campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel until Israel abides by international law.
