I am also deeply devastated that a human as inspirational as yourself chooses to play in Israel. Halting the slow genocide of the Palestinian peoples at the hands of the Israeli government, with the full backing of its loyal zionist supporters in the U.S., should be at the forefront of our foreign policy. It is a shame that you do not find solidarity with the Palestinian call for the complete boycott of Israel.

I am unsure why you are planning a concert in Israel. As an activist and a politically savy individual with full knowledge of Apartheid, oppression, violations of human and civil rights, et al., you must know the reality of Palestinian life. Bishop Tutu and others have spoken out about Apartheid in Israel/Palestine. There is an international movement for Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment. Why are you ignoring all of this? I urge you to look into your heart, evaluate all the facts, and make the right decision to NOT support the ongoing oppression of Palestinians. Please cancel your concert. Show solidarity with those that need your support.

Dear Gil Scott-Heron,
I cannot understand how a man like you, familiar with racism and oppression, can contemplate playing in Israel. I am a former Israeli (Jewish) citizen, having renounced my nationality many years ago because I did not wish to be a citizen of a colonialist and increasingly fascist state. Israel’s policies are much worse than those of Apartheid: under the latter’s rule African people were forced to live in Bantustans, often maltreated, injured and used as cheap labour. Israel does all these things but is a far more murderous state, unleashing death and devastation on thousands of Palestinians. What is worse though is that Israel doesn’t want the Palestinians for cheap labour, it wants to “cleanse” the country from Palestinians altogether. Palestinian land diminishes almost daily, houses are demolished, trees cut down and more.As a young child in Germany, where I was born, I saw graffiti on walls with swastikas and inscriptions of “Jews Out!” and “Death to Jews”. In East Jerusalem and Hebron I saw the same graffiti with the swastika replaced by the Star of David and Jews replaced by Arabs. The worst I saw in Hebron, it read: “Arabs to the gas chambers!” Please reconsider your decision and show your humanity.

As a fan of your work I too was saddened by your plan to play in the oppressive state of Israel. As a fan I cannot reconsile the anti-apartheid stance you held as a younger man with your current decision to play in a country that acts with such an appalling disregard for the rights, liberty and well-being of the displaced indigenous arab people. Please reconsider, look at the facts and I am sure you will make the right choice.

Dear Sir,Iwish to convey to you my concrn and feelings in regard your coming tour of Israel,
The Palestinian people have suffered a grave injustice at the hands of the Israeli in Palestine, for 60 years Israel has raped, killed and brutalized a people, purely to steal and usurp their land, the people of Palestine are no different to you or me, hard working, kind and peace loving, doing their best to provide for their families, until forced by the forces of zionism to stand up and defend their rights, the same rights to freedom and enjoyment of their home and families as we all expect. The Israeli has disregarded every rule of law expected of civilized people to steal the private property from its legitimate owners, imagine if you will the kkk entering your home, killing half your family then driving you at the point of a gun out of your home into the street, slamming the door in your face as you turned in useless protest……please do not reward them.

I am originally from South Africa and am aware of how the Israeli government is emulating the old apartheid regimes policies. I have also seen that they are very afraid of the term “Israeli Apartheid” and how it will negatively stigmatize them – it is well deserved. I am also aware that you were very against the old South African apartheid regime. So it surprises me that you would go to Israel to play a concert – it is akin to your going to Johannesburg and playing there during the Soweto riots in 1976. I hope you will not go and and legitimize the Israeli emulation of apartheid polices. I hope that you will embrace the boycott of Israel just as you embraced the boycott of the South African regime. Please could you not tour Israel? I am a former South African who has witnessed a country destroyed by racism and oppression. The scars of Apartheid are still visible in South Africa to this day. Israel treats the Arabs, who have lived on the land for over 1,000 years, worse than a person would treat an animal. By playing gigs in Israel, the money you earn would be tainted money. Israel has to learn that human rights and international law is expected of all countries without exception. Please help fight for justice for the Palestinian people by boycotting their oppressors. Please clarify your stance on the Israeli gig. Last night in London, you announced you were cancelling it. Yet Tel Aviv box office are still selling tickets??!!
I’m not quite sure how to put my feeling into words. The responses here are quite shocking.
Getting the news that you are coming to Israel has been one of the best things that happened to me this year. I think that most people who commented here have no idea of what’s really going on in Israel, apart from all politics, there is a great and true music scene here and to me music represents love and peace, not war and hatred.
By coming to Israel you can see the truth for yourself and help spread your message of love instead of helping these propaganda-heads spread their messages of boycott and hate.
Cancelling the Tel Aviv Gig would be a Victory to the extrimists. in both ends.

Well, i don’t realy know where to start..
Ever since i remember myself, i’m in constant search of HUMAN nature.
I was born into a very complicated situation in this place called Israel.i didn’t choose it. my families were forced to come here becouse they suffered hatred in their homelands.
I don’t Judge anyone who hates me, even though it’s just becouse- for them – i represent something that is so far from who i realy am.
God knows i find it so hard living in this world full of hatred, suffering and pain.
i turn to God almost everyday, asking him to help me keeping my heart in the right place and PRACTICING love and compassion.
there were times i wished to die for i felt some guilt for all this suffering of people and animals all over the world, but some how found great comfort and sense of empowerment in MUSIC and i just want you to know that you gave me so much INSPIRATION along my way.
Whatever it is you’ll decide – i’ll respect that and will forever cherish what you already gave me. I feel like i’ve just opened my heart now, where anyone can see. it’s not too easy.
i just wish you’ll come to shine some light over this crazy place. we need it.

MUSIC that crosses borders, views, races and personalities… dont let those voices stop you from using your music to bridge people, nations and borders… use your gift, come over here and see it with youre own eyes…Peace, Aylon
I love Gil Scott-Heron’s poetry and I really do see the link between his protest songs and the Israeli government acts.
BUT Gil, please don’t make me think you’ve surrendered to the pressure inflicted on you.
do it by making this show and by telling me and all of my friends in Tel Aviv, exactly how you feel. as an artist you should do it standing in the stage spotlight.
I know you might have to say stuff we don’t like to hear but then again, your harsh honesty is one of the reasons you’re so adored around the world and in Israel.
so as political poet you should say to any audience what’s on your heart instead of banning it.
looking forward to seeing you.

I have come to know your music ,your words only recently , with the release of your latest album. I was deeply moved by your words regarding the misconception of “coming from a broken home “ . I too am in a situation where one might regard my child as “coming from a broken home”. And I know that I can give her everything Lily Scott gave you.
Its a pity that your website has become subject to such acts of terror.
I am an Israeli. you see -your thoughts, your words -they all have a meaning for us in Israel too, As Im sure they do to Palestinians or any other nations.
I urge you to come to Israel and let us hear see and feel your unique perspective of things. Let us go home and think about what we saw and heard, gaining a strong, moral perspective . not as a nation, but as human beings.

all ( or most ) ya’ll calling to stop the show in Israel do not understand one simple thing :
Gil Scott Heron will not be performing for the whole of Israel!
damn, most people in Israel haven’t heard of Gil Scott Heron.
he’ll be in a venue that can consist not more than hundreds of people.
he’ll be performing to 400-800 tops people.
most of them we’ll be there because/also because they identify with his message and draw inspiration from his lyrics.
he’ll not be performing for the israeli prime minister for f***‘s sake.
he’ll be in a venue with supporters who yearn for his support as well. many people in that show will be those in israel trying to make a change.
as people born in this place – our only way is making a change from WITHIN.
Mr. Gil Scott Heron – as your fan and also as one of those who’s been spreading the g.s.h word here for years- You not performing here will be telling us we cannot make a change. I hope this will not be your way.
we- the 400-800 people: we’ll care you won’t come here.
the rest of the state of israel will not even know it was supposed to happen. It’s a matter of proportions…
The revolution will not be in front of the whole state. it’ll start small – in that venue.
i believe you have the courage to not discourage us, the minority trying to make a change.
respectfully
quami
Thank you for making the right decision. By not playing in Tel Aviv you are making a statement to the world that Apartheid is wrong. You have once again stood up to oppression, bigotry, and colonialism. You are a man that is unafraid of taking a stand against Israeli dominance over the Palestinians. God bless you now and always. As one very much looking forward to your visit to Tel Aviv I read with some sadness the voices of those urging you not to come here.
Israel is a democracy allowing you to freely speak out against mis-justice, and what place if not a place like this can your words be heard and echoed.
The situation has never been a simple one in Israel as some may want you to think and it is my wish that your voice be heard and echoed here, perhaps one of the most important places to speak out.
first of all i want to say that hearing you are coming to israel for a show made me so happy that i cant describe it in words…
hearing your live show is something i always wanted and now i finaly can do it.
and to all the people that is against this show, all i can say to you guys is:
stop talking about politics, LETTHEMUSICSPEAK!!!

One of the comments on your page seems to suggest that you will be canceling your scheduled concert in “Tel Aviv”.
I have not seen your direct comments to that effect, but in view of the destruction and suffering the Palestinian people have endured for the sake of that racist colonial enterprise known as “Israel”, I hope that the rumors of your cancelation of this concert are true.
For over 60 years, the zionists have used their past with the Nazis to silence the slightest criticism of the crimes of genocide, invasion and racism which they perpetrate against the people of Palestine. As they continue to steal land from Palestinians, destroy their villages and communities, force them off their land at gunpoint, and starve and massacre the Palestinians of Gaza, they project themselves as the soul arbiter of what constitutes oppression and doesn’t.
A concert by someone of your history in “Tel Aviv”, would not only entertain those who oppress and murder the Palestinians, but would help keep muddying the waters regarding their crimes in Palestine. The message that such a concert would communicate, is that the Zionist regime “must not be so bad”, if someone of the likes of Gil Scott-Heron is willing to perform for it.

Would you have performed as a guest of Gov. George Wallace’s Alabama. Performed as guest of the Apartheid South African state? Performed as a guest of Somoza’s Nicaragua, the death squad governments of El Salvador,
Ferdinand Marcos’ Philipines? I really dont think so.
Stand up for real justice and refuse to perform in the apartheid state of Israel.

i turn to God almost everyday, asking him to help me keeping my heart in the right place and PRACTICING love and compassion.
there were times i wished to die for i felt some guilt for all this suffering of people and animals all over the world, but some how found great comfort and sense of empowerment in MUSIC and i just want you to know that you gave me so much INSPIRATION along my way.
Whatever it is you’ll decide – i’ll respect that and will forever cherish what you already gave me. I feel like i’ve just opened my heart now, where anyone can see. it’s not too easy.
i just wish you’ll come to shine some light over this crazy place. we need it.

It is very sad to look at all those comments.
It is to bad that people take the only thing that doesn’t and should’nt have a color, race or religion, but can only bridge between people and put aside the IGNORANCE of the human nature
(who said POLITICS?).
I wish to every person who wrote a hate comment in this page that you can all ENJOY MUSIC FOR WHAT IT IS, AND NOT FOR WHO OR WHERE YOU’RE PLAYING IT!
otherwise, you’re just another politician…
Peace and Love.

Dear Gil

Dear G!
Please Keep Ur Music Free for everyone!
All of those people here calling all Israelies racists are narrow-mided racists themselves. Antisemetism is not new to us Jews, also when its in this current form of self-righteousness. Your art is NEEDED especially in these problematic areas of the world! Don’t give up on that please…

all ( or most ) ya’ll calling to stop the show in Israel do not understand one simple thing :

Thank you for making the right decision. By not playing in Tel Aviv you are making a statement to the world that Apartheid is wrong. You have once again stood up to oppression, bigotry, and colonialism. You are a man that is unafraid of taking a stand against Israeli dominance over the Palestinians. God bless you now and always. I will be buying your latest CD today to show you my support in return.
Peace and Hope,
Donna

As one very much looking forward to your visit to Tel Aviv I read with some sadness the voices of those urging you not to come here.
Israel is a democracy allowing you to freely speak out against mis-justice, and what place if not a place like this can your words be heard and echoed.
The situation has never been a simple one in Israel as some may want you to think and it is my wish that your voice be heard and echoed here, perhaps one of the most important places to speak out.

Dear Mr. Heron:

Gil, GO TO ISRAEL! You may learn something, like the truth. Don’t be intimidated by hecklers. Show some spine. Israel is the most free, most democratic state in the Middle East.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I would hope that your fans in Israel can understand that someone who calls for peace cannot contradict themselves by playing in an apartheid state. Whether they are upset or not, the facts are what they are. Thank you for taking a stand because our own government will not. Thank you . Thank you. Thank you.

Hi Gil,
I am Donald McGriggs sister. I thought about you while looking at a collage that I made for Donald’s going home to blend with the Universe service. I remembered that you couldn’t be there. I also remember that you were also my brother’s friend. There are lots of pictures of Donald (especially coming up as an adolescent) that I thought you would enjoy. It’s on PowerPoint but I can save it as a .pps file so that you can see it without having that Bill Gates moneymaker.
Peace n Love
